Welcome to my website! I am Elyse Semerdjian, the Robert Aram and Marianne Kaloosdian and Stephen and Marian Mugar Chair of Armenian Genocide Studies at the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University. My work centers on the history of the Ottoman Empire and the Armenian Genocide and has largely focused on the history of Aleppo and the Ottoman Armenian community. In my research and teaching, I pay special attention to gender, sexuality, Muslim and non-Muslim relations and how modern warfare, sectarianism, and genocide impact society, especially women and minorities. As an historian, I aspire to write the history of everyday life that centers the experiences of Armenians, women, and social classes typically left on the margins of history.
