I am Elyse Semerdjian, Robert Aram and Marianne Kaloosdian and Stephen and Marian Mugar Chair of Armenian Genocide Studies at the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University. My work centers on the history of the Ottoman Empire and the Armenian Genocide and has largely focused on the history of Aleppo and the Ottoman Armenian community. My research and teaching pays special attention to gender, sexuality, and Muslim and non-Muslim relations, especially as they are impacted by state violence and genocide. As a social historian, I aspire to write the history of everyday life that centers the experiences of Armenians, women, and social classes typically left on the margins of history.
